Teamwork sees Crown Paints take Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year

A dedicated team of  1,250 ‘green ambassadors’ led the way as Crown Paints clinched one of the UK’s premier prizes for sustainable manufacturing.

The company’s commitment to the environment has been taken to their hearts by staff, who played a key role in landing the prestigious Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year title at The Manufacturer Awards.

Judges gave the accolade to Crown, who beat off competition from Blue Chip companies across the nation, for the enthusiastic way the team has ensured sustainability has become the cornerstone of the business.

Joe Devitt, Crown Paints’ Managing Director, said: “This is a massive honour and it means so much because everyone in the company has played a part in the success.

“Having 1,250 ‘green ambassadors’ within a company makes a compelling force for good in terms of the environment – and the sheer enthusiasm and commitment of the team has been the key to this success.”

In 2008, Crown launched ‘Earthbalance®’ – a dedicated sustainability programme featuring ambitious plans to drive down greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 10 per cent by 2015 and 25 per cent by 2020.

The company set a secondary target of achieving zero waste to landfill by December 2012, but achieved it more than 12 months ahead of schedule.

Key to their success has been the engagement of staff, who have come up with wide-ranging ideas and innovations to tackle the long-term goals.

The Sustainable Manufacturer award is the fifth accolade in 2013 secured by the company for its pioneering approach.

It also won a Green Apple accolade, as well as the ‘Contribution to the Community’ prize at the Lancashire Business Environment Awards, organised by environmental regeneration organisation, Newground.

The company was named a UK national champion in the European Business awards 2013/2014 and was also named Green Manufacturer of the Year in the ‘Made In The North West’ awards.

Crown Paints also joined the small number of businesses in the UK to have achieved the prestigious Investor In People Gold award earlier this year.

Presented for outstanding performance, the accolade puts Crown in the top tier of UK organisations to make the gold grade.

At the time of their assessment, just over three per cent of organisations nationwide had achieved the status – and in the north of England only 19 were noted from a manufacturing-related sector.

Investors In People North of England singled out a wide range of activities for praise, including Crown’s pioneering approach to corporate responsibility, described by the assessor as ‘well ahead of the curve’ in areas including sustainability, community involvement and charitable support.

A strong team ethic, a working environment that creates a feel-good factor and the company’s supportive approach to work-life balance were also commended.

Brian Widdop, Technical Director at Crown Paints, said: “We see sustainability as a mission for the entire organisation – and it’s something all our staff take personally. It’s not just about filling a market niche; it’s about changing the way we do business.”
