Glasgow-based Novus Property Solutions apprentice, Kim Beagan, has been named Youthbuild Young Builder of the Year at a ceremony in the Houses of Parliament, and is the first young Scottish person to win the award.

Kim, 21, began her career with Novus as a trainee painter and decorator, joining through the Youthbuild programme in 2012. She has been involved with work at Caledonian University, in BT’s call centres and at Glasgow Holiday Inn Express.

Kim was nominated for the award by her keyworker at Youthbuild, Nicola Slavin, who was impressed with her progress and with the positive feedback she was consistently being given by her supervisors.

Youthbuild, run by charity Action for Children Scotland, works with a variety of organisations to provide training, qualifications and employment in the construction industry to disadvantaged young people.

The awards, in their 14th year, celebrate young people who have overcome personal barriers to train and work for the construction industry. The winners are presented with a trophy, framed certificate, a cheque and tools vouchers.

This year, more than 120 people attended the ceremony at the House of Commons. The judging panel chose Kim as the overall winner of the award, saying they were hugely impressed with her story and that she was a strong contender early on in the process.

Kim said: “I was shocked to win the award but I’m so happy that my hard work at Novus has been recognised by Youthbuild. I’m really proud to have been named as the Young Builder of the Year and I had a great day in London, attending the ceremony and sightseeing.”

James Cantley, operational director of children’s services at Action for Children Scotland, explains: “At Action for Children Scotland, we want to give young people who have no or few qualifications that vital first step on the career ladder. Kim’s success in being named Young Builder of the Year just goes to show that when young people are given an opportunity to prove themselves, they can deliver.”
