Johnstone's Trade and Chris Green 17th century farmhouse (2)

Products from Johnstone’s Trade’s comprehensive range have helped Chris Green Painters and Decorators win a prestigious national award.

The company, made up of Chris Green and his son Matt, landed the Small Contractor Project of the Year in the Premier Trophy Awards – a national competition promoting high standards of craftsmanship organised by the Painting and Decorating Association.

The duo were recognised for their work restoring a 17th century farmhouse in Knaresborough in just six weeks.

The project involved the complete redecoration of the property – originally built in the 1600s – to an extremely high standard using Johnstone’s Trade products.

Works included the treatment of distressed/deteriorated oak beams and the repair of plasterwork on ceilings and walls.

In all, they used Acrylic Matt, Covaplus, Aqua Satin and Satin Woodstain and Chris was fulsome in his praise of the products.

He said: “We used the Acrylic Matt because it was ideal for the customers to keep the walls clean without having the shine of a silk or satin that was not in keeping with the age of the property, and the Aqua Satin gave a lovely finish on the original doors.

“The Satin Woodstain, meanwhile, was perfect for the old beams that were crumbling in places. After we had cleaned them down they needed a finish that would not only protect them but also let the customers clean them down easily.”

Neil Ogilvie, chief executive of the Painting and Decorating Association, said: “The judging panel felt that the work was completed to a very high standard indeed and in keeping with the original décor of the farmhouse.

“Both new and old surfaces have an excellent finish throughout and the client was delighted with the workmanship of the entire project.

“This is a very important award to the PDA as it recognises the work of smaller contractors across the country. Chris and Matt should feel very proud of their achievements.”
