Crown Paints takes top ‘green’ manufacturing title

Crown Paints has been recognised for its long-standing commitment to sustainability by a leading manufacturing body.

The UK paint manufacturer has secured The Future Manufacturing Awards’ Environmental Excellence title for the North West region.

The awards, organised by manufacturers’ organisation EEF, celebrate businesses in the sector which have shown excellence in their innovation. The award was presented at a celebratory luncheon, held at the A.J. Bell Stadium in Eccles.

Crown Paints, which has manufacturing sites in Darwen, Lancashire and Hull, secured the title for taking wide-ranging action across the business – including driving energy and waste reductions, securing zero waste to landfill and achieving high percentage recycling rates – all as part of its award-winning Earthbalance® programme.

Earthbalance® sets a blueprint for greener manufacturing and is centred on a commitment by the company to reduce its Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) by 10 per cent by the end of 2015 and 25 per cent by 2020.

A spokesman from the EEF said: “The awards are a celebration of the achievements of manufacturing businesses who have improved operational efficiency, while reducing their environmental impact or developed business opportunities associated with the green agenda.

“Crown Paints provides a superb example of this approach in action.”

Mark Lloyd, Sustainability Manager at Crown Paints, said: “We are absolutely delighted our Earthbalance® programme has been recognised by such an eminent and well-respected manufacturers’ organisation as EEF.

“The award reflects the hard work and dedication of staff across the entire company.”

The company is now in the running for the national award and will present its entry at a National Judging Day next month. The winners will be announced at a special gala dinner in London on April 15.

This latest success comes just months after staff at Crown Paints celebrated winning a major award from the industry’s national trade body, The British Coatings Federation. It won the Coatings Care Best Performance Award, which reflects all round excellence in the industry.

Other awards secured by Crown Paints in recent years include The Manufacturer’s Sustainable Manufacturer of The Year Award, the Supply Chain Sustainability School Gold standard, Green Apple awards and Insider’s Green Manufacturer of the Year title.

Crown has also flown the flag for manufacturing in Europe as a UK national champion in the European Business Awards 2013/2014.
